This week was a chance for pure play, no pressures. Just what I needed!
First published June 8, 2024: I struggled with a couple of paintings lately, so it was a relief to sign up for a tutorial in The Happy Ever Crafter‘s Workshop Week 24. Workshop Week consists of 49 artists sharing tutorials, all for free last week only. I chose to pay for an early entry so that I can use these tutorials as potential reviews. I also get the added advantage of having them available forever… and all for $49.00.
This week I chose Andrea Nelson‘s tutorial on mixing watercolors with collage to make some florals. I have done this throughout my practice, so there was nothing new for me. I think this would be the perfect entry-level class for someone just starting out in simple collages. Andrea shares how to make collage “fodder” (the papers you will eventually cut and paste on your base work). She also shows you how she places everything for a nice composition.
Andrea uses a glue stick in her art, which isn’t the best for sticking papers together for the long haul. For this intro class it works well. It makes the project move faster, so that the beginning artist can see the potentials for collage, and making collage fodder. I had lots of fun painting, cutting and pasting. It is a great lesson for anyone wanting to get their feet wet (hehe) in watercolor and collage.
Here is my finished project:

I used India ink to create my collage vase, painting it with a glass dipping pen (my new fav shiny object). I also explored going outside the boundaries with a couple of leaves. Just making it mine. This was a fun break in a hectic week, and I appreciate Andrea’s joyful approach to teaching.
Thank you, Andrea!
And have an art-filled week!
