Changing Seasons

As one who loves the changing of the seasons (or any change for that matter), this next class was right up my alley.

First Published September 9, 2023: There are alot of reasons for taking this class from Shawn Petite:

  • Learn the difference in using matte gel vs fluid matte medium (I had been dying to better understand that!)
  • Learn how to use a stabilo pencil to provide dramatic accents
  • Lean how to show restraint in layering
  • Learn how to make dramatic clouds

Shawn has a soothing voice which makes a big difference to me when listening to multiple videos. She is very matter-of-fact about creating, yet still intentional. She is obviously comfortable using her creative tools.

The class entails four projects, one for each season. Shawn uses papers, stencils, palette knife and other tools to texturize her landscapes, including creating her own crackle paints.

I don’t really collect scrap papers. So I had to do a bit of hunting to find my collage pieces, and actually found it fun. As I pasted on the papers, I found myself letting go of worrying about the outcome. It is like sharing the impact of the outcome with the creator of the paper…. good or bad.

Here are the four seasons based on my interpretation. (This is my first class where I pretty much followed the leader and created pieces similar to theirs.)

Each piece is 8×10 created on a canvas board. Shawn used square MDF boards, but encouraged us to use what we had on hand, and that is what I did.

If you choose to take this class, be prepared to devote about 3 hours watching and learning as you make the art. This was by far the most time investment I have put into one class in a long time. I think it is well worth the time and cost.

Hope you enjoy your art making this week.
