Watercolor Basics

I try to look for classes that will stretch my knowledge and skills. Sometimes even the fundamentals can do that!

First Published August 19, 2023: This week I bought a special journal just for Joanne Sharpe’s “Color Crush” Whims 4 course. It is square, which is already a change for me, although when open it is a nice rectangle (stress averted). Joanne uses 25 lessons to give the artist an opportunity to use watercolors — and the appropriate brushes — to get to know how watercolors work:

  • How they spread
  • How they mix on the palette
  • How they mix on the paper
  • How they build up intensity

These are very simple lessons that anyone can do. You don’t have to have any xperience at all — just a desire to play with color. The lessons are actually addictive! I thought I would just do one lesson to get the feel of Joanne’s style, but I ended up doing seven! And I plan on finishing the course, since I think I will have a much better feel for watercolor when it is done.

I don’t want to give away any of Joanne’s tips and techniques, but I do want to say that her love of color and watercolors shows in each lesson. I urge anyone who has not had much experience with watercolors, or someone who feels like their use of watercolors is lacking, to take this class and just let go of your inhibitions and make color.

 Have a great week creating!!!
