Ever since I was a kid I was fascinated by everything Asian. Of course this was 60 years ago, when Asia meant mostly China to my ten-year old mind. Then, as an adult my family was privileged to host an exchange student from Hong Kong for a summer. That ony heightened my interest. So when I ran across Oriental Art Supply, I bought some brushes. This week I watched one of their free video tutorials. Read on…
First published on May 18, 2024: This week I was catching up on my emails when I found one of my followup emails from Oriental Art Supply (OAS) about a free tutorial on painting Wisteria in watercolors. Since my own Wisteria is not yet in bloom, I thought it was the perfect time to paint one. Ling Chi’s video was helpful to me in:
1) Showing me how to get organized ahead of time to be able to use wet-on-wet techniques
2) Helping me mix the right colors
3) Showing me how to load my brush with two different colors
The Oriental Art Supply (which doesn’t even know I am writing this review) has brushes, paints and paper that they use for their Oriental style of painting. I have bought some of their brushes, but prefer my own paints and papers. It does change the effects of your painting. Especially in the intensity of the colors. And I added a spray of green and purple at the end, just for fun. But there is a fragile quality of Oriental style painting that I have not yet captured. I keep on trying, tho!
Here is my Wisteria painting:

OAS has several artists with free videos. They are very relaxing to watch, and I learn something new each time. Hope you will enjoy, too!
Happy ArtVentures this week…
